Sierra Rock Rangers Geology and Climbing Camp

The Rock Ranger camp is designed to integrate technical climbing instruction with place-based environmental education. Taking place across four distinct climbing venues within the Mono Basin, students gain hands-on experience with igneous, metamorphic, and volcanic rock formations, using the landscape itself as both classroom and teacher.

Technical Objectives:
Participants will develop foundational climbing skills through structured instruction and guided practice. Using individual workbooks, students will set and track personal goals such as completing a rappel, tying essential knots (including the clove hitch), and demonstrating safe movement and communication on rock. Emphasis is placed on building confidence, risk awareness, and self-sufficiency in a supportive learning environment.

Educational Objectives:
Through direct interaction with the landscape, students will explore how geologic processes over millions of years have shaped the cliffs they climb. This place-based approach deepens understanding of the Mono Basin’s geological history and ecological systems while fostering respect, humility, and a sense of connection to the natural world. By engaging physically and intellectually with the environment, participants cultivate long-term appreciation and a commitment to stewardship.
