AIARE Avalanche Rescue Course

AIARE Avalanche Rescue is a one-day, stand-alone course designed for both new and experienced backcountry travelers and aspiring avalanche professionals. The course focuses on companion rescue techniques and is intended to be taken regularly to stay current with evolving best practices and gear developments.

For first-time participants, the course introduces the fundamentals of avalanche rescue, including how to respond if someone in their group is caught in an avalanche, how to identify and use essential rescue equipment, and how to conduct an efficient companion rescue. Returning students benefit from a deeper dive into advanced skills, realistic scenario practice, and updated methods, ensuring their knowledge stays fresh and relevant.

All participants receive personalized coaching from instructors, opportunities for hands-on practice in timed rescue scenarios, and constructive feedback on their performance. The course culminates in each student receiving a rescue card that documents their completion of the course and serves as proof of current rescue training.

This course is a prerequisite for AIARE 2 and Pro 1 courses and is strongly recommended by AIARE to be taken at least every two years. Regular participation helps individuals maintain confidence and competence in rescue techniques, which are critical in high-stakes avalanche situations.

More Infomation on the Mammoth Lake Course

Our AIARE Avalanche Rescue courses take place in the Mammoth Lakes region of the Eastern Sierra—an ideal setting for practicing rescue skills in real mountain terrain. Mammoth’s consistent snowfall, varied slope aspects, and complex snowpack offer the perfect environment for realistic rescue scenarios. From wide-open bowls to tree-lined glades and steep chutes, participants train in diverse terrain that mirrors the challenges of actual avalanche incidents. The area's dynamic weather and snow conditions also provide valuable context for understanding how factors like wind, sun exposure, and temperature shifts influence rescue response and decision-making in the backcountry.

Please note that transportation and lodging are not covered in the course fee. We recommend having a car capable of handling winter road conditions in case of inclement weather. Upon registration, you’ll receive a confirmation email. Two weeks before your course begins, we will send a detailed itinerary, including an equipment list, local lodging options, and gear rental locations in town.

It’s required that you come prepared to your course with your preferred snow travel mode, whether that be a ski touring setup, splitboard, or snowshoes. We thank you in advance for being prepared and look forward to some great days in the field with you!
