Required Technical Equipment

Important Notes

  • All required equipment is mandatory for participation and will be inspected on the first morning of the course.

  • Equipment must be in good working order.

  • PPE must be used according to the manufacturer’s inspection, care, and retirement guidelines.

  • Soft goods with excessive wear, unknown history, or clearly beyond their intended service life (including very old or hand-me-down gear) will not be used during the program.

  • Candidates are responsible for clearly marking all personal gear.

Required Equipment

  • UIAA-approved climbing helmet (example: Mammut Crag Sender)

  • UIAA-approved climbing harness with belay loop (example: Mammut Ophir)

  • Climbing shoes or approach shoes capable of climbing up to 5.8 top rope

  • Standard lead climbing rack (cams, stoppers/nuts, etc.; hexes and tri-cams optional), suitable for leading up to 5.6, including a stopper/nut removal tool

  • 8–12 quickdraws or 24" (60cm) sewn slings/runners with carabiners (emphasis on sling draws)

  • 1–2 48" (120cm) sewn slings/runners (at least one must be nylon)

  • 4+ locking HMS/pear carabiners (examples: Mammut Classic HMS or Crag HMS)

  • 4–5 additional locking carabiners (example: Mammut Sender Screwgate)

  • Tube-style belay/rappel device (examples: Mammut Crag Light or BD ATC)

  • Assisted-braking belay device (examples: Petzl GriGri or Edelrid Pinch)

  • 1–2 prusik loops (1m of 6mm nylon accessory cord) (example: Sterling Hollowblock 2)

  • 1–2 cordelettes (5m of 7mm nylon accessory cord)

  • Optional: 180cm “triple” or 240cm “quad” sling for anchoring (example: Mammut Contact Sling)

  • One 60m single dynamic rope (9.2–10mm) suitable for leading and top roping (example: Mammut 9.5 Crag We Care)

  • One 30–50m static or semi-static rigging rope (9–10.5mm) for anchors and fixed lines (examples: Mammut 10.0 Performance Static or Sterling 3/8 SuperStatic 2)
