AMGA SINGLE PITCH INSTRUCTOR (SPI) COURSE & EXAM
The AMGA Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) Program is the industry standard for professional climbers who instruct outdoors in a single-pitch environment. Our courses are led by official AMGA SPI Providers with decades of experience.
The SPI Course (3 Days)
The three-day (27-hour) SPI Course is the first step in the SPI Program. It covers instructional techniques, risk management, and technical skills specific to single-pitch climbing. Candidates learn how to manage groups, teach technical skills, and perform rescues in a professional setting.
The SPI Exam (2 Days)
The two-day (16-hour) SPI Exam evaluates a candidate's technical skills, instructional ability, and risk management. Successful completion awards the Single Pitch Instructor certification, which is valid for three years.
Course Prerequisites
- You have a genuine interest in rock climbing and mountain instruction.
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You have at least 12 months of outdoor climbing experience.
- You have lead climbed a minimum of 15 trad routes.
- You can lead climb outdoor routes at 5.6 or higher.
- You are proficient with basic knots and hitches.
Location & Logistics
Courses are typically held in the world-class climbing areas near Mammoth Lakes and Bishop, California. Depending on the season and weather, we utilize areas such as Horseshoe Lake, Pine Creek, or the Owens River Gorge. Specific meeting locations will be confirmed 7 days prior to the start date.

- SPI Course: $650 per candidate
- SPI Exam: $500 per candidate
